Essentially, a dental emergency refers to any damage or discomfort in your smile that isn’t life threatening. Even if the discomfort or injury appears minor, we suggest a visit for treatment to prevent the onset of major complications. In today’s blog, your Allen, TX, dentist talks about our approach to dental emergency care.
The Causes of Dental Emergencies
A dental emergency could be brought on by an injury or accident that cracks or chips a tooth. Sudden discomfort due to tooth decay or infection is another issue, as is bits of food becoming trapped between teeth and causing pain. The causes vary, but when you have pain or damage in your teeth or gums you should contact our team right away. Even if the issue happens outside of normal office hours, we could arrange to see you and offer care. Don’t let an injury cause discomfort and complications over time, see us right away for treatment.
Easing Your Discomfort
You can also take steps to ease discomfort until we can see you. If your tooth hurts, rinse with water and gently floss either side of it. This is also recommended if you have an object caught between the teeth. If you chip a tooth, try to recover any pieces and bring them with you. Rinse with warm water and use cloth or gauze to control any bleeding. A cold compress or ice pack to the side of the face could help address swelling. If a crown or filling is loose or lost, try to avoid sugary foods and drinks, or hot or cold foods and drinks, as the exposed tooth will be very sensitive.
If you knock a tooth out, pick it up by the crown, never the roots, and place it in a glass of milk or salt water, Bring it with you to the office. Again, take measures to control bleeding and facial swelling. If you don’t have milk or salt water available, gently rinse the tooth under running water to remove dirt, and put it back into the socket. Take care not to remove any tissues!
