Trick or treating is a highlight of Halloween for kids and their families in our community. But too much sugar could mean the onset of tooth decay. Which is why you need to take steps to protect your teeth. In today’s blog, your Allen, TX, dentist talks about staying free of cavities after Halloween.
Treats and Tricks
We all love Halloween treats, and everyone has their favorites. But too much sugar leaves particles behind on the teeth, or lodged between them. This means bacteria has a chance to break them down, a process that leads to a rise in oral acidity. The teeth are then coated in plaque buildup, which hardens with time into tartar. The buildup not only causes bad breath and teeth stains, but weakens the outer enamel to cause cavities. In addition to painful tooth sensitivity and toothaches, smiles are at risk for the onset of infection too. Which is why we want your family to take a few simple precautions to protect teeth from cavities.
Better Care at Home
First, make sure everyone in your family is brushing their teeth in the morning and at night for at least two minutes each session. They also need to floss, and when brushing, we recommend a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen the outer enamel. These actions help lower the risk of cavities. You can also help by cutting back on candies with sticky ingredients, like caramel and taffy, which can cling to the teeth. You can also give your kids a chance to trade their candy to you for a toy or money. You also help fight cavities by limiting your kids to only a few pieces after dinner each day. The increased production of saliva helps rinse away the sugars, and chasing the candy with a glass of water helps too. If you’re going to be giving out treats in your neighborhood or apartment building, then consider offering non candy options like temporary tattoos, stickers, crayons, or fun party favors like plastic spider rings and skeletons, or rubber bats.
