We consider any damage or pain to your smile that isn’t life threatening to be a dental emergency. When these occur, treatment could prevent major complications down the road, such as worsening pain and infection. In today’s blog, your Allen, TX, dentist talks about when to see our team for emergency dental treatment.
Common Injuries
What are common examples of dental emergencies? Well, a chipped or cracked tooth is one, even if the damage appears minor this could still lead to tooth decay and infection. A loose or missing crown or filling is a cause for concern, as is a knocked loose or knocked-out tooth. If you have unexplained pain or bleeding in your teeth and gums, you should let us know right away. The sooner our team can address these emergency scenarios, the sooner we can restore comfort, function, and beauty to your smile again!
Easing Your Initial Pain
You can call us anytime, even outside of normal business houses, and we will contact you to schedule an appointment soon. In the meantime, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease discomfort. If you have a toothache or an object caught between your teeth, then rinse with warm water and floss on either side of the tooth. If a tooth is damaged or knocked loose, you can stem the bleeding with a cloth and use a cold compress to control facial bleeding. If a tooth is knocked out completely, then pick it up by the crown portion, never touch the root, and place it in a glass of salt water or milk. If this isn’t possible, gently rinse it with water and place it back into your socket until we can see you. If you have a loose or missing restoration, then avoid sugar foods and drinks or very hot or cold foods and drinks, as the area will be very sensitive.
Restoring Smiles
At our office, we can address minor damage in one visit with dental bonding, or create a custom crown for more severe cases. We can replace compromised restorations too. Each patient will receive custom and personalized care to address their unique smile, and obtain attractive and durable results. If you have any questions about addressing a dental emergency, then contact our team today to learn more. We look forward to seeing you and returning your smile to optimal health, beauty, and function again.
