We recently looked at our dental checkups and how they protect smiles. However, as part of these visits we also clean the teeth, removing harmful buildup of plaque and tartar. In today’s blog, your Allen, TX, dentist talks about how we professionally clean the teeth and how we use a scaling and root planing to prevent periodontal problems.
The Impact of Your Plaque Buildup
Plaque buildup is a bacterial byproduct that accumulates as harmful oral bacteria consume the particles left behind by the foods and drinks we consume, particularly those left by sugary and starchy items. As this happens, oral acidity levels rise and plaque begins to coat the teeth, and hardens into tartar with time. This cannot be removed with brushing and flossing alone, and could eventually weaken and erode outer enamel or even irritate and inflame the gum tissues. The result is a higher risk of cavities, dental infections, gingivitis, and even gum disease, not to mention bad breath and stained teeth. Which is why regular removal of the buildup is so crucial!
Removing the Plaque
Every six months we want to see you for a thorough dental cleaning. This is a quick and simple process, using an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool to gently and thoroughly remove any and all plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth. We then polish the teeth for a brighter appearance and a smoother finish. This is beneficial for kids two and older, as well as teens and adults. Having it done every six months prevents the buildup from causing cavities or periodontal issues, so you maintain better oral health.
Deep Cleanings
But what if you already have serious inflammation, with sore, red, and bleeding gums? In this situation, you either have gingivitis that needs to be reversed, or full-on gum disease that needs to be managed. A deep cleaning, also known as a scaling and root planing, can accomplish this. Essentially, we use the same technology to remove buildup from the teeth, but we also remove it from the roots as well. This could take one visit, or up to four, depending on how severe the buildup actually is. Afterward, we again polish the teeth and traditional cleanings will be recommended every three to four months. This helps protect your smile from periodontal problems that could threaten tooth stability! If you have any questions then please contact our team today.
