A dental cleaning is recommended every six months, and helps safeguard the health of both your teeth and gums. In today’s blog, your Allen TX, dentist will explain how a cleaning helps improve your oral health, and what to expect from this procedure. We’re also look at a deep cleaning, which can help address gum disease!
The Cleaning Procedure
When you see us every six months, we will use an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool to begin breaking up and removing all plaque and tartar buildup. Unless removed, plaque and tartar cling to the teeth and weaken enamel, while also inflaming gum issues. A higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease could develop, as could bad breath and stained teeth. The procedure helps improve both the health and beauty of your smile. We complete the procedure by carefully polishing the teeth for a smoother feel and brighter appearance. The process only takes a few minutes, and is beneficial for kids two and older, as well as teens, adults, and even seniors! If you haven’t scheduled one recently for you or a member of your family, we suggest doing so soon.
Scaling and Root Planing
When you have sore, red gums that bleed when you brush and floss, this could mean gingivitis or possibly gum disease. To reverse gingivitis and begin managing gum disease, preventing later stages linked to tooth loss, we may suggest a deep cleaning known as a scaling and root planing. Basically, we administer a numbing agent and then remove buildup from the teeth and roots with an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool. The process is more involved, and could take between one and four visits, depending on the extent of your buildup. Afterward, routine cleanings every three to four months could be recommended to help keep your gums healthy and strong.
Limiting Plaque Buildup
To limit plaque buildup in between your six-month visits, we suggest brushing your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste. Each session should take about two minutes. We also recommend flossing every evening, moving the tape up and down the length of every tooth and dipping below the gum line. A healthy diet free of sugary foods and drinks could be beneficial too! If you have any questions about how we protect the health of your smile, or if you would like to set up a visit for you or a member of your family, then give us a call today.
